CATALYST REGIONAL WORKSHOP
Capacity Development for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation
27-28 September 2012
Vedetta sul Mediterraneo, Giovinazzo, Bari, Italy
Hosted by the Water Research Institute, National Research Council (CNR-IRSA)
Via F. De Blasio, 5, 70132 Bari (Italy)

Capacity development for the management of climate extremes, with focus on droughts and earthquakes, will be the theme of the first workshop of the CATALYST Project in Giovinazzo, Bari, Italy at the end of this month. This European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) funded project seeks to gather the latest scientific information in the area of disaster risk management and synthesize it into a series of reports designed to bridge the gaps among and between science, practice and policy-making.
As disasters will continue to increase in the Mediterranean region, as more vulnerable people and assets are exposed to climate extremes and earthquakes, there is a need at both local and national levels to reassess  vulnerability and exposure in order to better manage disaster risk. Both local and international experts working in the field, specifically focusing on Europe will be in attendance.  Among the scheduled speakers at the workshop is Prof. Dr. Gerd Tetzlaff of the Universität Leipzig who will present on the urgent need to link capacity development in disaster risk reduction to adaptation to climate change.  Dr. Ebru Gencer of Columbia University (USA) will present the state of the art in capacity development in response to earthquakes.  A key activity will be round table discussions among the gathered experts on the state of the art and best practices in disaster risk reduction for droughts, earthquakes and flooding, and promoting changes in the way in which disaster risk management is carried out in the European Mediterranean region.
The workshop is organized by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and hosted by the Water Research Institute of Italy's National Research Council (CNR-IRSA).  The workshop will take place on the 27th and 28th of September in Bari, Italy at the Vedetta sul Mediterraneo, via Marco Polo, 11, Giovinazzo.
